Be Charlotte – Do Not Disturb

Years & Years – If You’re Over Me

Nina Nesbitt – Loyal To Me

  • 500 miles (I’m gonna be) – The Proclaimers

  • The Bonnie Banks o’Loch Lomond

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love were ever won’t to gae
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond

O ye’ll tak’ the high road, and I’ll tak’ the low road
And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond

‘Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen
On the steep, steep side o’ Ben Lomond
Where in purple hue, the hieland hills we view
And the moon coming out in the gloaming

O ye’ll tak’ the high road, and I’ll tak’ the low road
And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond

The wee birdies sing and the wild flowers spring
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping
But the broken heart it kens, nae second spring again
Though the waeful may cease frae their greeting

O ye’ll tak’ the high road, and I’ll tak’ the low road
And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond

Petit lexique écossais rapide :

  • Bonnie = beau, belle

Madame x, Madonna

“Madame X is a secret agent, travelling around the world, changing identities, fighting for freedom, bringing light to dark places.

She is a cha cha instructor, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a teacher, a nun, a cabaret singer, a saint, a prostitute. “ (album booklet)

“Madame X” has been out since June 14th, and I wanted to wait and listen to it a few times before writing about it as I couldn’t decide whether or not I liked this album.

Some days I was loving it, some others I wasn’t so sure. I think that you have to be in a certain kind of mood to fully enjoy this record. This is not the album you’ll put on casually when your friends are coming over or when you’re cleaning the house.

It’s probably Madonna’s most personal album she’s ever made. She has become more and more political throughout the years and she speaks her truth: gun control, women’s right, religion, oppressed minorities… Madame X speaks on behalf of us all.

“I’ll be Islam, if Islam is hated
I’ll be Israel, if they’re incarcerated
I’ll be Native Indian, if the Indian has been taken
And I’ll be a woman, if she’s raped and her heart is breaking”

(Killers Who Are Partying)

It’s not an easy album to listen to as it’s very intense, lyrically speaking, and it is confusing in so many ways. If I had to sum it up, I would say that most of the songs are like Russian nesting dolls. There are several songs within one and you never know where it’s going to take you.

“Dark Ballet” and “God Control” are the best examples. The first one starts with a piano and vocals, then out of the blue, it goes straight to the Nutcracker Suite with a robotic voice talking about politics:

“They are so naive
They think we are not aware of their crimes
We know, but we are just not ready to act “

“God Control” starts the same way, then a disco beat takes over, building up the intensity of the song with strings and a choir.

“People think that I’m insane
The only gun is in my brain
Each new birth, it gives me hope
That’s why I don’t smoke that dope […]  We need to wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up”

God Control – video

The world of Madame X

“The world of Madame X” is a 22 minutes documentary released by Amazon on June 29th. Madonna tells us the story of the record and I feel like I finally understood the things that didn’t make sense when I heard it for the first time.

The first thing we learn is that Madame X was Madonna’s nickname when she was studying at the Martha Graham school of dance, as Martha thought she was a mysterious young woman. She decided it was a perfect name for her new album.

Madonna found her happy place in Lisbon, where she met Dino D’Santiago, a Portuguese singer of Cape Verdean descent, who took her to living room music sessions. She met all these incredible latin musicians there who play “the music of the soul” and that’s why we can hear some Fado influences (“Killer who are partying”), Cape Verdean rhythms (“Batuka”) and some Portuguese lyrics (“Crazy”) in the album .

Inspired by these sessions, Madonna did some recordings and sent them to producer Mirwais, who worked with her previously on the albums “Music”, “American Life” and “Confessions on the Dancefloor”, hoping he would be as inspired as her. And Mirwais worked his magic. His special sound is very obvious on tracks like “Crave” or “Extreme Occident”.

Madonna also tells us that even if she loves voices that don’t sound human and music that sounds robotic, there always has to be some humanity in everything she’s doing.

This is why the album is so experimental: Madonna combined her musical experiences in Lisbon with the trendy sound of Mirwais, while keeping her soul by writing about her values and what she believes in: freedom, peace and tolerance. I strongly recommend to watch “The World of Madame X“, it’s so interesting.

“I Rise” is opening with a segment of Stoneman Douglas High School shooting survivor Emma Gonzales’ speech and it is the perfect song to end this intense album. It’s about hope and courage, and Madonna gives a voice to minorities who are suffering and don’t have the opportunity to speak their mind.

“Just hold on to the little bit of magic in it “

I’m glad I took some time before writing about “Madame X”. I finally bought the album. Even if I probably won’t listen to it as much as I listen to my favourite album “Ray Of Light”, at least now I know for sure that “Madame X” is iconic in its own bizarre way.

5 Francophone artists you need to know!

The good thing about living in a different country is that I get to discover new music that we don’t have in France and then share it with my French friends.

But it also allows me to bring French music in the UK. I wrote an article in French about 5 of my favourite Scottish artists, so I thought I’ll do the same for my British friends!

I chose 5 artists from different genres, so whether you’re into pop, rap, electronic music or storytellers, there should be at least one that you’ll like!

Here’s a top 5 of Francophone artists you need to check out!

  • Angèle

The 23 years old Belgian singer/songwriter broke into the music scene in 2017, after releasing her first single “La loi de Murphy” which has now over 24 million views on Youtube.

She quickly became a hitmaker, mixing electronic beats with a touch of pop and reggae sometimes.

She launched her debut album “Brol” in October 2018 and she was smart enough to write “Balance ton quoi”, a feminist anthem inspired by the “MeToo” movement. Once again, the video has been a huge success. More than 30 million people saw the video, where Angele shows with a great sense of humour how sexist the society can be sometimes.

Check it out, it’s brilliant!

  • Vanessa Paradis

When I talk about Vanessa Paradis here in Glasgow, I’m surprised to find out that most people have heard her debut single “Joe Le Taxi” before.

But it was in 1988 and she has come a long way ever since! She collaborated with Lenny Kravitz, Johnny Depp and other talented French artists and released some beautiful albums such as “Bliss” in 2000, which includes the sublime single “Pourtant” or “Divinidylle” with the lovely “L’incendie”.

Don’t be fooled by her childlike voice and her shyness, she is an amazing performer.

Many people grew up with her as she was only 14 when she started her career and that’s why she’s very appreciated in France, not only as an artist but as a woman as well.

  • Matthieu Chedid
Credits: Yann Orhan

Best known as -M-, Matthieu Chedid is a gifted singer/songwriter and musician who is at his best when he’s performing live. His shows are always spectacular and they usually sell out quickly.

He introduced his musical alter ego -M- in 1997, when releasing his first solo album “Le Baptème” (the baptism) . -M- wears colourful clothes, uses sparkling guitars on stage and his hairstyle is a signature. His dad Louis Chedid is a singer, his grandmother Andrée Chedid a well-known poet, and we can hear this legacy in -M-‘s music. His songs are complex and poetic and he’s singing them with a high-pitched voice.

I should also mention that he worked with Vanessa Paradis on her album “Bliss” and wrote the music for her single “Pourtant”.

Here’s a link to one of his most popular songs ” Je dis Aime” , but you should also listen to “Machistador” and “Qui de nous deux” !

  • Ofenbach

The French Touch is now well-known and respected worldwide, thanks to Daft Punk and David Guetta, who made electronic music accessible to a wide audience by collaborating with pop stars.

Though their songs are in English, I thought I would talk about Ofenbach as they deserve more exposure. This DJ duo from Paris delivers a very interesting mix of electronic, pop and rock music.  If it’s fair to admit that their music can be a little repetitive, they still manage to prove that sometimes less is more. Their singles “Be Mine”, “Katchi” and the latest one “Rock it” feature a bass line that you’ll remember for sure.

Their music is perfect for a summer playlist, so it’s the best of times to check them out!

  • Mc Solaar

Mc Solaar is no ordinary rapper. He has a unique way with words, relying on word play and poetry and his flow is amazing. He is the best French rapper to me.

His biggest hits were released in the 90’s. His first single “Bouge de là” (out in 1991) is the one which made rap trendy and popular in France.

His masterpiece “Solaar Pleure” is one of my favourite French songs EVER.  The lyrics, the sound, the rhythm, the video… the song is a pure gem.

I’m not really into rap usually, but he’s so unique that you definitely need to listen to some tunes. You should start with “Solaar Pleure” and “Caroline”!

Sheryl Crow, Royal concert hall – Glasgow

One of the things you’ll quickly learn about me is that I have a passion for 90’s pop-pop/rock music. I guess you know it already if you read my Spice Girls’ gig review.

It was a time where a lot of female singers or bands with a female lead vocalist broke into the music scene: Spice Girls, The Cranberries, The Corrs, Texas, No Doubt, Alanis Morissette and, of course, Sheryl Crow.

I saw Sheryl Crow yesterday for the very first time, and it took me back to my younger years, when I used to sing my favourite single “If It Makes You Happy” in my bedroom, with a hair brush as a mic. Don’t laugh! I was belting it! =)

It did make me happy (see what I’m doing here?) to find out she was playing the Royal Concert Hall, which is my favourite venue in Glasgow. I saw 2 gigs there before (The Pretenders and Hanson, yes, I really wasn’t joking about being a 90’s fan) and the sound is always absolutely amazing.

Colin McCleod was the support act, and he gave us some very good tunes, playing the guitar and singing with a raw voice. He reminded me of someone, I couldn’t put my finger on it, and my friend gave me the answer as he had the same feeling as me: Rufus Wainwright.

I would really like to hear him with a full band! It was a very nice set.

Then I finally heard Sheryl Crow’s recognisable voice and the first thing I could say after a few songs is that she gives plenty of room to her musicians. The live arrangements give everyone a chance to be in the spotlight. I really enjoyed that, it didn’t feel like there were a superstar and her band. They work as a whole.

It was the kind of gig that keeps me entertain until the end. Most of her songs are very catchy and it never gets boring. She was pretty talkative and she said it herself, she was “very happy to play a 2 hours set”, after being the support act for Phil Collins and The Eagles lately. We could definitely tell that she enjoyed every minute of it.

It seems like she made the setlist thinking of her fans, as she almost apologised for playing a couple of songs from her forthcoming album “Threads”, which will be out on August 30th. I guess she knows that we were all expecting to hear her 90’s best tunes.

And what a pleasure it was indeed to hear all these songs that we’ve never forgotten, such as  “All I Wanna Do”, “My Favourite Mistake” and, of course “If It Makes You Happy”!

She told us a funny story about “All I Wanna Do” by the way: she thought it was a throw away song when it actually got her where she is now. “This proves how little I know about music,” she said with a laugh.

The new songs are pure Sheryl Crow, a mix of country/rock vibes and “Soak Up The Sun” kind of pop.

Prove me Wrong” is a hit for sure, as I found myself singing along when it was actually the first time I was hearing it. The chorus is so addictive and easy to remember! The studio version features Stevie Nicks and Maren Morris and has been out since June 5th.

I have to mention the amazing live version of “Everyday Is A Winding Road”, ending as a rock’n’roll song. I loved it and I really didn’t see that coming!

She also uses a sort of whistle voice sometimes, and that made me realise what a wide vocal range she has. She makes it sound so easy. I couldn’t believe she is 57!

The whole show was brilliant, nothing was missing for me to have the best of times.

“Threads” will be a collaborative album featuring her long-time friends and artists who inspired her to be a songwriter, and she mentioned that it will probably be her last. She wants to focus on releasing individual tracks.

Let’s hope she’ll still be touring in the future, as the nine-time Grammy award winner showed us last night that she’s still a hitmaker and an incredible live performer.

5 artistes Ecossais a decouvrir!

  • Tom McGuire and The Brassholes

Spiceworld tour, Edinburgh

It all started with a phone call from my father in autumn 2018: “What do you want for Christmas?”

I seem to remember it took me half a second to answer: “I’d like to go and see the Spice Girls in Edinburgh!”

Yes, I’m 30 something and I used to be a Spice Girl in my younger years, like all of us, teenage girls in the 90’s. Funny story: I will never forget my mother’s face when I asked her if I could go to a costume party dressed up as Geri in the Say You’ll Be There video. I was 12. Oops.

(I’m sure you all remember, but, just in case, Say You’ll be there Geri):

Anyway, 50 minutes in the virtual queue on Ticketmaster later, my father finally got me the Holy Grail: a ticket, in the seating area, for the Spice Girls gig in Edinburgh on June 8th. OH-MY-GOD.

June couldn’t come soon enough!

And finally, it did. Dressed up as Mel B, (as I didn’t think walking around in Scotland wearing Geri’s iconic Union Jack dress was the best move) here I am, in a bus to Edinburgh.

Murrayfield was full of Spice Girls that night, and I found myself sitting next to the 3 other Spice Girls, Mel C, Emma and Geri. It was meant to be!

It was about 7:30pm when the support act, Jess Glynne took the stage.

I didn’t really know what to expect. She’s very trendy now as she releases hit after hit.

Her songs are very catchy, and she knows how to work a crowd. Her vocals were on point, but it’s fair to mention that her backing vocalists also did an amazing job. I really enjoyed the live arrangements, especially on Rather Be that she mixed with My Love.

She managed to build up the best of vibe and was definitely a great choice as support act for the Spice Girls.

After a wee while, the 4 remaining Spice Girls finally rose from the front section of the half moon stage, opening the show with “Spice Up Your Life”. It totally put us in the mood!

From that moment, I felt like I was partying with 67 000 friends, singing our heart out and giving our best dance moves. (“Stop” is definitely my fav!)

After a few songs, the girls took a moment to talk to the very enthusiastic crowd, while Geri wrapped herself in a tartan blanket.  It wasn’t the only tribute to Scotland: Mel B talked to us with a decent Scottish accent, Emma held an Irn Bru can on “Holler”, and they started to sing a bit of 500 miles by the Proclaimers when introducing the band.

I was very pleased that they put Something Kinda Funny in the setlist, as it’s one of my favourite tracks from the album “Spice”, but though the setlist itself was perfect, I have to admit that the order wasn’t the best. The girls did 3 slow songs in a row “Viva Forever”, Let The Love Lead The Way” and “Goodbye” and it kind of killed the vibe for me.

Fortunately, the girls then delivered the super catchy “Never Give Up On The Good Times” to start a new set and this second half was very festive right until the end.

Some of the high points of the show were to hear the crowd singing “Say You’ll Be There”, and the wristbands that had been handed out and that were flashing to the beat gave Emma’s long high note on “2 Become 1” a magical dimension.

They belted out their iconic hit “Wannabe”, wearing a sparkling version of their original outfits from the video and it was already time to leave the stage, after telling us what an amazing crowd we were. The whole night felt like a dream!

I know that for some people, the Spice Girls tour is just a business thing, like, “yeah, of course they reunited, they need the money”.

Well, I never had this feeling that during the show. I’ve been following them of social media for years, and they’ve never stopped hanging out ever since they split up in 1998.

They were very spontaneous, holding hands, hugging and supporting each other throughout the gig. There is no doubt to me that friendship never ended and that they were truly happy to go on tour together.

I felt a real connection between them and their fans, and this show was one of the most impressive ones I’ve ever seen… The staging was breathtaking with fireworks display, confetti, the Spice ring and the big screen delivering messages of love, acceptance and empowerment.

The Spice Girls put on an incredible show, celebrating 25 years of friendship with some of their most dedicated fans.

Nothing breaks like a heart – Mark Ronson feat Miley Cyrus

I wrote this review a few months ago, but I’ve never had the occasion to post it.

This song is still one of my favourites at the moment, so even if it has been out for a while, I decided to post this article as Mark Ronson has just released his 5th album “Late Night Feelings” that features this single.

Every superstar has known this throughout the years: If you need a hit, Mark Ronson is the one to go to.

The gifted songwriter/producer needs no introduction, and his strength has always been his adaptability.

Every artist who has ever collaborated with him got a tailored album, revealing their true musical colours.

Whether we’re talking about Amy Winehouse and her iconic “Back to Black” that suits her voice and personality perfectly or Bruno Mars with the groovy sound of “Uptown Funk”, Ronson seems to have the key to success and turns everything into gold.

Miley Cyrus started to exploit her love for country music in her last album “Younger Now” with songs like “Malibu” or “Week without you” in 2017.

She’s now teaming up with Mark Ronson on the very addictive “Nothing breaks like a heart, full of country vibes mixed with a pop beat and dramatic strings.

Once again, Ronson found the perfect balance between the truest sound of the artist he’s working with and the musical trends.  Miley is going back to her roots with a guitar that reminds us of “Jolene” (remember the cover she did for the Backyard Sessions in 2012) while keeping the trendy sound of her last album.

“This world can hurt you, it cuts you deep and leaves a scar, things fall apart but nothing breaks like a heart”

The lyrics are pretty straight forward, the song is about a relationship that is going down in flames.

We got all night to fall in love, but just like that we fall apart, we’re broken, we’re broken”.

But it may have a deeper meaning if we look at the video.

Nothing breaks like a heart – video

Miley Cyrus wouldn’t be Miley Cyrus without a little bit of provocation.

She rides her car through the town, witnessing everything that is wrong with the world, and especially with the American society: children with guns, teenagers so obsessed with their phones that they don’t notice the car crashing through a wall, people fighting for toys and chocolate in a very busy store…

“Nothing, nothing, nothing’s gonna save us now”.

Ronson shows again that he really is a hitmaker with this new single, and Miley revealed that it’s not the only song he’s been working on with her of her upcoming album.

She also confirmed that the producer Mike Will Made-It from her album “Bangerz” is back in the game. Let’s not forget that “Bangerz” is the 2nd best selling album by a female artist in 2013, with the famous “Wrecking Ball”.

With such a great team behind her, Miley Cyrus’s new album will probably be one of the most successful in 2019. She released an EP called “She is coming” on May 30th, and the new album should be called “She is”, but it doesn’t have a release date yet.

What about you, are you waiting for this album as much as I do?
